Transcript of the Opening Address at the First Session of the First General Assembly of the Taiwan Usher Syndrome and Deafblind Association
On Saturday, January 27, 2024
At 1:00 PM, the opening address at the first session of the first general assembly of the association in Nangang, Taipei.
Conceived on the high-speed rail that very morning,
It includes some responses to phenomena observed by the co-founding professor.
I am very glad to see so many people here today, participating and offering their support.
At its inception, this association was based solely on the wishes of a few individuals.
Some wanted to help those whose vision and hearing are both affected.
Some hoped that what they study and continuously research could benefit more people in need.
And some wanted their plight to be seen, hoping that this endlessly turning world could take care of them a little more.
Under various circumstances,
We began to try, taking it one step at a time, slowly gathering
People in similar situations or with similar ideals.
From the middle of last year to the beginning of this year,
From Facebook groups to Line groups,
We were pleasantly surprised to find,
That our philosophy was receiving more and more responses,
Our actions were gaining more and more attention,
And today, we are just a little bit away from accomplishing
That small step of our initial wish.
Based on my own past experiences, I personally believe
That in the real world, nothing is certain.
Effort does not necessarily yield results. Dreams cannot always be realized. Under the turning of society, not the whole world can hear the sound of our cries.
For those whose vision and hearing are affected, Illness and defects are not necessarily a blessing or a curse. Role models, paragons, striving upwards, expecting to be of use— These are also not necessarily our labels.
I think what we should value the most Is how we become "human." How do we fight for our rights as humans? Do we also have the capacity for free choice? With free will, living well according to our own desires, Instead of entirely relying on the pity and expectations of others As the meaning of our existence.
The association cannot promise that anything will definitely change, For the whole society, the whole world.
But I hope that in this process of striving, Everyone can discover something together and make themselves better.
